According to the International Aluminum Institute (IAI), in March 2025, global primary aluminum production amounted to 6.227 million tons. This is 2.3% higher than the same month last year. The average daily output decreased by 0.6% compared to February to 200.9 thousand tons.
In general, over three months, according to IAI, 18.108 million tons of aluminum were produced worldwide. This is 1.8% higher than the first quarter of last year.
The Chinese aluminum industry continues to show stable growth. In March, industry enterprises produced 3.729 million tons of metal, according to IAI, which is 3.4% more than in the same month last year. The output volume in the first quarter exceeded the previous year’s figure by 2.6% and reached 10.852 million tons.
This year, IAI combined data on Russia, Western and Eastern Europe in its report. In March, aluminum production in this macroregion amounted to 594 thousand tons, and for three months – 1.728 million tons. This is 2.8 and 1.9% more than a year earlier, respectively.
At the same time, there was a slight decline in the Persian Gulf countries. In March, local companies received 523 thousand tons of aluminum, which is 2.6% less than in the same month of 2024, and by the end of the first quarter, they reduced production by 3.9% to 1.523 million tons.
In Asian countries excluding China, the first quarter figure was exactly equal to last year’s – 1.200 million tons. But in March, the countries of the region produced 415 thousand tons of aluminum, exceeding the level of the previous year by 1.2%.
Companies from the USA and Canada in March received 338 thousand tons of aluminum, and from South American countries – 131 thousand tons. This is, respectively, 0.9% less and 3.1% more than a year earlier. According to the results of the first quarter, aluminum production in North America fell by 1.9% compared to last year to 979 thousand tons, while in South America it increased by 1.9% to 381 thousand tons.
The metal production in the countries of Oceania decreased slightly – 158 thousand tons in March (-1.9% compared to last year’s result) and 458 thousand tons over three months (-2.1%). In Africa, on the contrary, growth of 5.6% was achieved compared to the first quarter of 2024 to 398 thousand tons. Of these, 138 thousand tons fell in March (growth of 7.8%).
