The unique qualities, the widespread occurrence in nature and the relative ease of mining metals from the bowels of the earth determine their very different, and sometimes unusual, application in a variety of fields of human activity. Products from metals and their alloys surround us in a good half of the things that we use every day. However, in everyday worries it is not often necessary to think about where metals come from, how they are produced and how they are processed, what their properties and features are. In general, all metals can be divided into two conditional groups – black and non-ferrous. Non-ferrous metals are all metals except iron, chromium, manganese and their alloys. Thus, non-ferrous metals include aluminum, copper, nickel, zinc, silicon and others, as well as their alloys. A characteristic feature inherent in non-ferrous metals is their high corrosion resistance, i.e. ability to serve for a long time without losing one’s qualities.

Based on this classification, metallurgy of light metals and metallurgy of heavy metals are distinguished.
Due to the anticorrosion properties of non-ferrous metals, namely their low level of oxidizability when in contact with oxygen, their production and use in everyday life has become commonplace – from batteries to cars, submarines to ships, and small gliders to giant planes. They’re also widely used to manufacture a variety of parts, structures, and components, and as the anti-corrosion coating for other metals such as on brass-coated water taps, valves, pipes etc.
