According to the Chinese publication Shanghai Metals Market (SMM), the country produced 3.687 million tons of aluminum in March 2025, up 3.7% year-on-year. The output volume in the first quarter reached 11.028 million tons. This is 5.3% higher than the same period last year.
According to SMM estimates, the modernization projects of two aluminum smelters in Sichuan Province and Chongqing City were completed by the end of March. Another similar project in Guangxi is scheduled to be completed in October this year. In this regard, a further increase in average daily production is expected in April.
According to SMM, the production volume of metallurgical alumina reached 7.550 million tons in March, up 11.3% year-on-year. The first quarter saw an 11.7% increase to 22.073 million tons.
A new line was put into operation in Guangxi Province in March, which provided a certain increase. However, SMM predicts a contraction in production in April compared to the previous month. Due to the oversupply, alumina prices fell both in China and in foreign markets. At the same time, the cost of raw materials remains relatively high. Therefore, some enterprises are expected to reduce output.
